Harsh?

Five years for criticising the Pakistan board? Shoaib's punishment sounds unduly harsh and it remains to be seen whether it sticks. Over at Cricinfo Osman Samiuddin tries to make sense out of the confusion.

Yes, perhaps a bit of a misunderstood character, I'm not really sure.

What I am sure about is that he's just about the fastest bowler I've ever seen, with the possible exception of Jeff Thomson circa 1974-75.

The yorker which removes Fleming in the video is a perfect example -could any batsman, anywhere, ever, have played that?

Talent gone awry, I think that defines Shoaib Akhtar. Spoilt to the hilt and a narcissist to the core, he's a maverick entertainer nonetheless. The potential history-maker who preferred to remain history-sheeter.

Thanks, Som. I agree - the word 'narcissist' seems entirely appropriate.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see him bowling for Pakistan again before long.
